Administrative Leadership Team Challenge - Involving the Community (Team)
Parent and community involvement is one of the hallmarks of a highly functioning school environment. As administrators, you cannot underestimate the amount of support available from your parents and community partners. A good administrator understands that parents need options and guidance when it comes to structured involvement; not all parents can, or will, participate equally in all areas. Providing different opportunities to bring parents and community members into your school allows parents to choose what works best for them, and provides the greatest measure of community involvement in your school.
Last week, your administrative leadership team determined a plan to effectively use the resources in your school. Now that you have a plan to use your resources to implement your intervention or strategy, you will develop an action plan for involving parents and community members using the six types of involvement framework.
Administrative Leadership Team Challenge:
Develop an action plan for family and community involvement that is linked to your school improvement goal and creates a welcoming partnership climate for students, parents, and educators. In your plan, identify at least one appropriate activity for each of the six types of involvement.
You are not restricted to using the ELC discussion forum for your team challenge, but please be sure to give both your instructor and instructor support (Helen) access to whatever format you use, and use your team's weekly discussion thread to note where to find the information. Directions
The Facilitator should create a new thread in the team discussion forum entitled Week 5: Involving the Community.
Use the questions below to guide your team discussion in response to the team challenge:
With what types of parent involvement are you familiar?
For each of the six types of involvement, what specific activities can you implement to help achieve your school improvement goal?
How can parents and community members help to support your intervention or strategy?
What appropriate activities can you implement to promote a welcoming partnership climate for students, parents, and educators for your elementary, middle, or high school?
What obstacles might you encounter when communicating with parents and community members?
What are challenges of involving families of diverse backgrounds and needs? (Tip: You may want to refer to your discussion from Week 8 of the Effective Leadership course.)
What are some challenges using technology to involve families?
How will you ensure that understanding, appreciation, and respect for differences are fostered by all members of the school community?
How can you use parent volunteers more effectively?
How will you ensure that you meet NCLB requirements for communication?
How will you communicate your plans and expectations for parent involvement with parents and gather their input?
By midnight Monday, your team should come to consensus on an action plan for family and community involvement, based on the six types of involvement framework. The team’s Reporter should post your team’s plan in a clearly labeled thread in your team discussion forum.
Next week, you will work independently on Part 4 of your Administrative Action Plan. Individually, you will be required to submit your action plan with a rationale that references the literature. The Resource Library is provided to assist you in identifying articles to reference.
Administrative Action Plan - Part 3 (Individual)
Your team has conducted a needs assessment, developed a vision, and identified an instructional goal. For Part 3 of your Administrative Action Plan, you will involve staff to make budgetary decisions, communicate your decisions effectively, engage in strategic planning in the use of resources, and consider professional development needs. To support your ideas, you will integrate research and practice by citing articles from the Resource Library that focus on promoting a shared commitment to your vision, managing operations, and managing resources.

As you have experienced, the format of this course differs from your previous courses in the Administration and Supervision program. This week, you will complete an individual reflection to provide feedback on the structure and usefulness of the course so far.
In your blog, respond to the following questions:
How has the structure of this course (team discussion, individual assignment) helped you to better understand the concepts presented?
How will the structure of this course better prepare you for your administrative roles?
In what areas would you like additional content or support?
What questions or comments do you have about either the content or the structure of this course?
Post your response to your blog by midnight Monday. Be sure to set permissions so that your instructor and instructor support can review. Provide the URL in your individual forum.
